About Us : History

The ASBA Fall Showcase team finished 3rd at the Perfect Game USA WWBA World Championships in Jupiter, FL. For high school prospects this is their world series. The tournament consisted of 80 prospect laden teams from all over the US and Caribbean. The ASBA team finished the tournament with a 6-1 record losing in the semi finals to the ABD Bulldogs 3-0. What makes the ASBA team different than most is the concentration of its players all from the Philadelphia area. Many MLB organizations sponsored scout teams for the event including Atlanta Braves, Baltimore Orioles, Texas Rangers, New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals. These teams were made up of hand picked players from all over the country.

The biggest game of the tournament came on Saturday October 25th versus perennial national power The East Cobb Astros. Both teams at the time were 2 and 0 in pool play with the eventual winner advancing to the playoff round with one pool play game remaining. Down 6-2 in the bottom of the 7th inning Mike Lubanski (Malvern Prep) lead off with a single and then the offense exploded for 5 runs with key hits from Rob Amaro, Sean Coyle and Chris Gosik. The eventual winning run came on a wild pitch scoring Christian Walker.

Many of the local stars had incredible performances both on the field and on the mound. Taylor Runge (Octarara HS 88mph) threw one of the best games at the tournament with a 7 inning, 2 hit complete game, 15 strikeout performance. Eric Ruth (North Penn HS 89 mph) cemented himself as one of the top pitchers as well throwing a combined 7 innings with 13 strike outs. Other pitchers with great performances included Neil Herring (WC East 90 mph), Tim Cooney (Malvern Prep 87 mph), Tom Timoney 1 win and 1 save (Mercersburg Academy 88 mph), Jim Stokes (The Hill School 91 mph), Ryan McCallin (St. Mark’s 89 mph), Andrew Strenge (Holy Ghost Prep 87 mph) and Jay Lynch (WC East 87 mph). Offensively the ASBA hitters dominated the opposing pitchers with great performances from Christian Walker ( Kennedy Kenrick), Chris Gosik ( Malvern Prep), Greg Olinski ( Holy Ghost Prep), Justin Leeson (WC East), Mark Rhine (Penn Charter), Steve Snyder (WC East), Rob Amaro (Penn Charter), Tom Coyle (Germantown Academy), Mike Lubanski ( Malvern Prep) and Sean Coyle (Germantown Academy). Sean Coyle had one of the best offensive performances of the entire tournament going 12 for 16. Steve Snyder had a game winning hit against the Florida Pokers and Greg Olenski had a game winning RBI versus the Dallas Tigers.
